William Thaniel Sargent

April 29, 1936 — July 7, 2019

William Thaniel “Sarge” Sargent, 83, passed away on Sunday July 7, 2019 at his home. Sarge was born on April 29, 1936 in Shannon, Mississippi to Archie and Inez Hester Sargent. He was married to Barbara Rea on August 24, 1957 and early on, he was a heavy equipment operator for TVA and a construction manager for oil rig sites. He retired from Monroe County as Road Manager. An avid outdoorsman, he loved to deer hunt and run dogs, and he was a member of the Nettleton Hunting and Fishing Club for over 40 years. He had a special love for horses and buggies and he was a master gardener who could grow peas to supply the whole community. He liked riding his tractor, watching the Atlanta Braves play, but most of all; his best time was spent with his children and grandchildren. Totally devoted to the Lord, he was a member of the Cason Baptist Church where he served as a deacon. Sarge was a simple man who would rather have a hot buttered biscuit rather than a rib eye steak any day. Funeral services for Sarge will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 10, 2019 at Cleveland-Moffett Funeral Home in Amory with Bro. Jim Manley and Bro. Matt Long officiating. Burial, with Keith Ray speaking, will be in Haughton Memorial Park. Survivors include three sons, William Anthony Sargent, Robert Earl Sargent (Sharon), and Michael Sargent all of Amory; one sister, Peggy Sargent Todd of Amory; 6 grandchildren, Brandon Sargent (Rachel), Shannon Sargent Gray (Gunnar), Annah Grace Sargent, James Michael Sargent, Karleigh Sargent, and Noah Sargent; 4 great grandchildren, Sydney Sargent, Briley Sargent, Ryder Gray, and Whaley Sargent; sisters-in-law, Jennie Sargent and Hazel Stovall; brother-in-law, Ruble Rea (Shirley); a host of nieces and nephews; and many special friends including, the adult Sunday school class at Cason Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; daughter, Patricia Ann Sargent; brothers, Doyle and Billy Sargent; and twin brother, George Daniel Sargent. Pallbearers will be Alex Sargent, Gunnar Gray, Rick Stovall, Matt Wilson, Neal Sargent, William Bishop, Daniel Bishop, and Austin Harris. Honorary pallbearers will be Louis Dean, Roger Dean, Randall Gray, Jesse Brown, Carl Sneed, Cecil Jackson, Larry Todd, Dewey Hannon, and the Monroe County Road Department. Visitation will be on Tuesday evening from 5 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Lebonheur Children’s Hospital, P.O. Box 42048, Memphis, TN 38174 Condolences may be shared with the family at clevelandmoffettfuneralhome.com
