Athens- Greely Wayne Carter , 70, died on Wednesday, December 10, 2014 at his home. Born July 14, 1944, he was a son of Greely Boyd and Sally Marie Smothers Carter. Before his retirement, he was an over the road truck driver for 47 years and he married Wanda Ruth Moore. He served as a Baptist minister and pastored churches in Mississippi and Alabama. An accomplished fiddle player he enjoyed going to bluegrass festivals winning several. He enjoyed collecting and restoring tractors; gardening especially raising watermelons; raising chickens having a favorite rooster named Clyde. An avid deer hunter, he was a member of the GMT Hunting Club. Known as a generous, outgoing, and friendly gentleman, he was also a member of the Bigbee Baptist Church serving on the Benevolence Committee and a musician. He enjoyed spending time with his family and took great pride in celebrating his 50th wedding anniversary in September.
Funeral Services will be 2 p.m. Friday, December 12, 2014 at the Cleveland-Moffett Funeral Home Chapel in Amory with Bro. Harvey Reeves, Bro. Justin Haynes, and Bro. Robert Moore officiating. Burial will be in the Howell Cemetery.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Ruth Moore Carter of Athens; one daughter, Cindy Carter Winders (Jimmy) of Wren; one brother, Robert Carter of Smithville; two sisters, Mary Jo Morgan (Julian) of Tupelo and Drewese Lindsey (Ralph) of Baldwyn; two grandchildren, J.T. Winders and Lera Winders; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Pallbearers will be Kevin Morgan, Greg Morgan, Mike Moore, Tim Moore, Bruce Cyr, Jim Kellum, and Phil Moore. Honorary pallbearers will be Hubert Guin and the men of the Bigbee Baptist Church.
Visitation will be 4 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home on Thursday and will continue until service time on Friday.
