Rivers Smith

Rivers Ray Reese Smith, age 99, passed away peacefully on March 15, 2025. Born in Fulton, on October 3, 1925, to Roy and Winona Leech Reese, Rivers lived a life full of grace, joy, and unwavering faith.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Winona Reese; seven brothers and sisters; her beloved husband, Russell Smith; and her daughter, Jan Smith Braning. Rivers is survived by her two daughters, Linda Kaye McCoy (Joe) of Brandon, and Martha Watkins (Bobby) of Starkville. She also leaves behind five grandchildren: Kim Jackson (Thornton, Colorado), Courtney Streeter (Madison), Lee McCoy (Southaven), Amelia Morrison (Nashville, Tennessee), and Will Watkins (San Antonio, Texas). In addition, Rivers was blessed with 11 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild and numerous nieces and nephews.

Rivers was a faithful follower of Christ throughout her life, and her commitment was evident in her membership over the years, including First Baptist Church of Amory, Mississippi, Meadowwood Baptist, and River Bend Baptist. Rivers had a friendly smile and encouraging words that brought joy to all who knew her. She found contentment in simple pleasures, especially being outdoors, whether riding her bike or sitting on the porch. Rivers enjoyed singing in the church choir and found joy in praising God through song.

She was a generous lady, always ready to offer a kind word or a cold drink to anyone in need. Her love for Jesus, her family, and the Mississippi State Bulldogs were constants in her life. Rivers faced death as she faced life—with courage, dignity, and a strong faith. She passed away peacefully, with her daughter Martha by her side.

The family is ever grateful for the loving care shown during her last few years at the Beehive assisted living home in Starkville and the nurses with Enhabit Hospice.

A funeral service will be held at Cleveland-Moffett Funeral Home in Amory, Mississippi, Saturday, March 22 at 2:00, with visitation one hour prior.
