Phillip Thompson

March 19, 1941 — December 7, 2023

Smithville

Phillip Wayne Thompson, 82, passed away on Thursday, December 7, 2023 at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo.  Born in Monroe County on March 19, 1941 he was a son to Bill and Ruth Sheffield Thompson.  He was a 1959 graduate of Smithville High School and just a few weeks later, married Laverne Stanford with whom he would spend the next 64 years.  Born just nine months prior to the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Phillip was a great student of history and it is considered ironic for the family that he would leave this world on Pearl Harbor Day.  He worked most of his life in the furniture industry at Hickory Springs making polyfoam and he had great pride from his early years of working on the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway with it being the largest water resource project built in the United States.  A truly devoted husband, he was also a faithful member of First Assembly of God and was involved in any way he could.  His hobbies included fishing, watching westers on TV and loved his dog, Eli.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. on Monday, December 11, 2023 at Cleveland-Moffett Funeral Home with Pastor Justin Myers and Randy Minga officiating.  Burial will follow in the Haughton Memorial Park.

In addition to his wife, Laverne Thompson, he is survived by one son, Tim Thompson (Tonya) of Smithville; one daughter, Tina Morrow (Jeff) of Smithville; one sister, Karen Smith (Robert) of Smithville; one grandson, Blake Thompson (Mindy); two great grandchildren, Nicole Thompson and Peyton Thompson; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Heather Nicole Thompson; his parents; two brothers, Gene and Jerry Thompson; and one sister, Carolyn Walker.

Pallbearers will be Greg Stanford, Adam Minga, Jeff Boozer, Shawn Gore, and Richard Allred.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until 12:45 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the First Assembly of God.
