Larry Joe Hendrik, 79, passed away on March 19, 2025 at NMMC- Gilmore in Amory. He was born in Sherman Texas on July 16, 1945 to the late Andrew and Mary Evelyn Moran Brown. Moving to Alabama, Joe was was a mechanic for Bear Bryant Volkswagen in Tuscaloosa. He was proud of his mechanic skills and loved to work on cars. Later on, Joe began a longtime career with the Frisco Railroad as a locomotive engineer, moving freight between Amory and South Alabama. He enjoyed his time on the railroad and loved to reminisce the old railroad days with his retired coworkers. If you knew Joe, you knew that he was a kind, caring and compassionate man. Joe absolutely adored his wife of 40 years, Margaret Coker Hendrik whom he married on December 15, 1984. HIs greatest joy was his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. When it came to the grands and great grands, he was considered putty in their hands and that was just the way Joe liked it. When they would come to visit, it was a given that Joe was going to check the oil and gas in their cars and make sure they had spending money. Joe also loved music. Growing up in Texas, he developed an ear for country music. At the sound of the first note, he could tell you the name of each song and artist being played. A devoted and faithful Christian, Joe also enjoyed all kinds of gospel music, especially the Gaithers. Joe worshipped at New Bethel Baptist Church and loved being with his church family. He also enjoyed antiques of all kinds and thought if its old, its got to be expensive. Out of all of his accomplishments in life, being called Papa Joe and fulfilling that role was his greatest accomplishment.
Joe is survived by his wife, Margaret Hendrik, Carolina Community; children, Michael Hendrik and Kim Hendrik, both of Carolina Community; brother, Jimmy Hendrik, Amory; grandchildren, Chris Bagwell, Beth Bagwell, Anna Hendrik, John Michael Hendrik and April Hendrik; great grandchildren, Emma Moore, Madison House, Sophie House and Kohen Harrington; several nieces and nephews.
