Amory- Jerry Wayne Hood, 77, passed away on Thursday, January 24, 2019 at his residence. He was born on September 21, 1941 on the family farm in Bigbee during the middle of cotton picking season, and always told everyone he was born on a cotton sack. Anyone who was ever around Jerry for just a moment, knew he was one more of a jokester and story teller. Jerry was a graduate of Nettleton High School, attended IJC and honorably served in the Mississippi National Guard. At the age of 10 he started playing the guitar which would lead to a lifetime of music and friends. Jerry played as a member of many bands, such as John Mihelic and the Night Lighters, Southern Comfort, Knee Deep Bluegrass and the Carolina Monday Night Jam. One of Jerry’s many claims to fame was playing back up for Elvis Presley at the old National Guard Armory and playing for BB King in Meridian. Honored for a lifetime of musical achievements, Jerry was inducted into the Rock-A-Billy Hall of fame in Jackson, TN. Loving to take trips and play at festivals, his last and most favorite trip was right before his surgery to the Athens Bluegrass Festival. He was a master carpenter and worked for the public many years. Jerry enjoyed gardening, quail hunting and drinking coffee with his “coffee bunch” at Hardees and McDonalds. His family was his pride, and he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was a member of Cason Baptist Church and was baptized in the old Tombigbee River. Jerry’s most requested gospel song and one he dearly loved to sing was I Believe, and we know that he’s now singing it in Heaven.
He is survived by his son, Mike Hood (Kim Walker), Amory; sister, Judy Holman (Dick), Amory; brothers, Lamar Hood, Gore Springs, MS, Billy Hood (Ann), Amory and Hershel Hood (Ann), Amory; grandchildren, Victoria Ann Hood, Shane Michael Hood and Jason Anthony Hood (Kim); great grandchildren, Braylen Hayes Huffman, Lawson Max Huffman and Olivia Jane Hood; ex-wife and friend, Joni Hood, Amory and a host of nieces and nephews.
