James Franklin Conwill, 96, passed away on Wednesday, February 15, 2023 at NMMC- Gilmore in Amory. He was born on November 1, 1926 in Monroe County to the late David Alonzo and Ruby Estelle Sumner Conwill. James honorably served his country, serving in the United States Navy during WWII. While in the Navy, James was on a troop carrier, sailing across the Atlantic to Germany multiple times and at the end of the war, James’s ship sailed up the Rhine River. James made his home in Birmingham for nearly 50 years. He worked as an aircraft mechanic at Hayes Aircraft. He moved back to Monroe County in the early 2000’s. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. James was an easy going gentleman and friend to all who knew him.
He is survived by his nieces and nephews, Glenda Cox, Amory, Judy Johnson, Byhalia, Carol Reynolds (Stan), Birmingham, Tommy Colvin (Debbie), Grand Prairie, TX, Harold H. “Sonny” Conwill, Amory, Glenn Harris (Jerri), Hernando, Victor Conwill, Byhalia, David Conwill, Locust Fork, AL; a host of great and great great nieces and nephews and cousins.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wives, Laverne Smith Conwill and Alma Freda Conwill; brothers and sisters, David Conwill, Sarah Conwill Bratton, Francis Harris, Harold Conwill, Walter Conwill, Doris Colvin and Charles Conwill.
A graveside service with military honors and Masonic Rites will be held at 3 on Monday, February 20, 2023 at Carolina Cemetery. Bro Rob Sargent will officiate. Pallbearers will be Roger Dean, Glenn Harris, Tommy Colvin, Ronnie Hood and Wayne Conwill.
Everyone is asked to meet at Carolina Cemetery at 2:45 PM.
