Iris Irvin Christian, 88, passed away on Wednesday, October 5, 2022, at her residence. She was born on March 26, 1934, in Monroe County to Dow and Elba Nash Irvin. She was valedictorian of the Hatley High School class of 1952 and graduated from Freed-Hardeman College in 1954. She married T.F. Christian on December 24, 1955. While working at a bank in Birmingham, she learned shorthand, which she later benefited from while working in the medical field as a transcriptionist. She worked for Dr. John Murphy and eventually with Dr. Oaks for over 20 years as the office manager and X-ray technician. She was with the Family Medicine Clinic for several years and retired from Gilmore Memorial Hospital at the age of 72. Iris loved picking blackberries, which she used to cook wonderful cobblers. She also loved working in her garden, growing various vegetables, and she could out-shell anyone when it came to peas and butterbeans. Once a week for all her adult life, you could find her at the beauty shop getting her hair fixed. Iris had a selfless and generous heart and loved people. Still, her family was most important to her, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, whom she loved to cook for. She was a faithful member of the Amory Church of Christ.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Friday, October 7, 2022, at Cleveland-Moffett Funeral Home, with ministers Philip Hathcock and Derrick Maranto officiating. Burial will follow at the New Hope Cemetery.
