Donald Gene Bennett, 86, passed away on Monday, December 16, 2024 at Tupelo Nursing and Rehab. He was born on January 23, 1938 in Schlater, MS and was a son to Harry Harper and Bessie Pearl Weeks Bennett. He grew up in Sulligent and later lived in Monroe County. Gene worked as a lab technician for Conoco/Vista Chemicals prior to his retirement and for a few years he worked security for Weyerhauser in Amory. A proud veteran serving in the U.S. Army, he retired from the Alabama National Guard, Co. D, 977th Engineer Battalion. He was married to the former Sue Jeffreys who preceded him in death on June 11, 2019. Gene was very creative and whatever he envisioned became a reality. He enjoyed watching old westerns and he was a member of Meadowood Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, December 18, 2024 at Cleveland-Moffett Funeral Home with Dr. Lloyd Sweatt officiating. Burial will be in the Amory Masonic Cemetery.
His is survived by his son, Don Bennett (Amy), Saltillo; two daughters, Pamela Nerren, Sulligent, AL and Patti Jo Reid (Tom), S. Pasadena, FL; two brothers, Bobby Bennett (Margarette), Anniston, AL and Jerry Bennett (Betty), Groveland, FL; sister, Frances Jeffreys, Magnolia, TX; 4 grandchildren, Les Nerren (Jill), Sara Brown (Robert), Eric Nerren (Caitlin), and Taylor Bennett; great grandchildren, Liliana Nerren, Emma Grace Nerren, Jeremy Nerren, Mary Nerren, and Caleb Weaver.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Sue Bennett; one sister, Millie Manlove; and three brothers, Bill, Dewitt, and Paul Bennett.
Pallbearers will be Les Nerren, Taylor Bennett, David Lamb, Eric Nerren, Jeff Finch, and Tom Reid. Honorary pallbearers will be Robert Brown, David Jeffreys, Rodney Jeffreys, Michael Bennett, Robbie Miller, Michael Halbert, Ray Grubbs, Frank McCreless, Greg McCreless, Nick McCreless, Randy Finch, and Tim Clouse.
Visitation will be from 2 p.m. until the service hour on Wednesday.
