Ernest James Cummings, 66, passed away on Sunday, September 27, 2020 at North Mississippi Medical Center-Gilmore in Amory. Born in Memphis on February 10, 1954, he was a son to Bilbo and Madie Cox Cummings. Moving to Amory as a child, he was a graduate of Amory High School class of 1972 where he lettered in football and track and he was named Mr. AHS in 1972. He attended IJC from 1973-1974 on a football scholarship before transferring to Tennessee Tech on a scholarship. He was All-Conference, permanent team captain, named in the Outstanding Young Athletes of America, and all Little 10 Football Conference. Ernie married Dorothy Foster in 1981 and worked for Metalloy in Verona for many years and prior to his retirement, he worked for MMC in Amory until 2011. He loved to fish and was an avid golfer. He enjoyed spending time with his family, his grandchildren, riding backroads seeing the scenery.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday, October 1, 2020 at Cleveland-Moffett Funeral Home with Bro. Stanley Blaylock officiating. Burial will follow in the Bethlehem Cemetery.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Foster Cummings of Amory; one son, Matthew Cummings of Virginia; two daughters, Stephanie Edwards (Jason) of Hatley and Mandy Cummings Williams of Starkville; grandchildren, Rylee Parham, Presleigh Edwards, Elijah Cummings, Lola and Reed Cummings, Halie and Maggie Edwards, Riley Williams, Logan Williams, and Reese Williams; a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins; and special friends, Bobby Harper, John Cox, and Bill Abney.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Billy Cummings and Jackie Cummings.
Pallbearers will be Bobby Harper Dewayne Foster, Bubba Foster, Timothy Parish, Bradlee Parish, and Jason Edwards. Honorary pallbearers will be the AHS Football team of ’72 and ’73 and ’74 team at IJC.
Visitation will be on Wednesday evening from 5 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
