Eddie Reed, Sr.

Edward Ray Reed, 74, passed away on Wednesday, September 13, 2023 at the Mississippi State Veterans’ Home in Oxford.  He was born on September 30, 1948 and was a son to John W. and Martha Wilkins Reed. Eddie grew up in the Batesville and Courtland areas and was a 1968 graduate of South Panola High School and he later attended Northwest MS Community College.  A U.S. Army veteran, he proudly served in the 173rdAirborne Brigade in Vietnam.  He began his law enforcement career with the Batesville Police Department and in 1978, he graduated from the Mississippi Highway Safety Patrol, and was assigned to the Starkville district.  G-36 patrolled the highways of Monroe County for many years and served on the MHP SWAT team and was active in competitive shooting.  Following retirement, he worked at the Columbus Air Force Base and for the Nettleton Police Department.  Eddie coached little league baseball in Hamilton and was heavily involved in power lifting, owning a gym in Aberdeen.  In addition, he was a brown belt in karate.  He was an avid Ole Miss Rebels fan.  His children and grandchildren were his pride and joy and he attended Woodlawn Church of Christ in Steens.

 

A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. on Sunday, September 24, 2023 at Cleveland-Moffett Funeral Home in Amory with Bro. Dempsey Rowland and Col. Randy Ginn officiating.  Visitation will be from 1p.m. until the time for service.

 

He is survived by his partner of 24 years, Carolyn Hester of Amory; 2 sons, Edward “Eddie” Reed, Jr. (Vanessa) and Lance Reed of Woodstock, GA; his daughter, Alika Logan (Jonathan) of Steens; 2 brothers, Bobby Reed (Rebecca) and Bill Reed (Connie) of Batesville; one sister, Linda Stroup (Cecil) of Walnut, MS; and 4 grandchildren, Austin Logan, Ashton Logan, Elijah Green-Reed, and Sylas Reed.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, John Charles Reed.

 

Honorary pallbearers will be Joe Schrock, Bobby Colston, Steve Hunt, Randy Ginn, Dusty Reed, Christopher Reed, and Michael Stroup.  Other honorary pallbearers will be the Mississippi Highway Patrol.

 

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Wound Warrior's Project.
