Carolina Community- C.B. “Bo” Bickerstaff, Jr. passed away Saturday, June 25, 2016 at Countrywood Manor, Alzheimer’s Unit in Mantachie. Born May 29, 1938 in Monroe County he was a son of Corbett “Son” and Jennie Monaghan Bickerstaff and attended Pine Grove and Nettleton Schools. A true Christian who worshipped the Lord in his own way, he was a member of Carolina Methodist Church.
He served honorably for 8 years with the Mississippi Army National Guard and was called in for active duty for a month during the riot at Ole Miss University in 1962 and stayed until peace was restored back. He worked as a journeyman pipefitter in the United Pipefitter’s Association Union, Local 714 for 47 years until his retirement in 2000. Know by his coworkers as “Bo”, he was a hard worker and a great provider for his family and was also privileged to also work alongside his father and brother. He loved animals, especially his favorite dog Dixie and was often found taking in thrown away puppies and stray dogs. C.B. was famous for his ability to catch all kinds of snakes, but his favorite to catch were rattlesnakes.
During his younger years he always enjoyed having a big garden, raising cows, pigs and hunting dogs. He also loved to fish and hunt, cooking everything he harvested. Loving to have fish fry’s and stew cookings, his friends and family would all come over to eat. He and his wife, Julia was loved entertaining on the weekend’s by cooking, playing cards, dancing and listening to country music.
A sports enthusiast, he loved to watch the Ole Miss Rebels football games and the Atlanta Braves baseball. A gifted athlete himself, he played on several softball teams in the Carolina and Evergreen area. He love ball so much that he even built a ball field in his pasture where the Carolina youth played most Sunday afternoon’s.
After retirement, he enjoyed being at home mowing and doing other yard work, search word puzzles and listening to country and gospel music, especially Elvis. He was a collector of many things and enjoyed showing his collections off, especially his tiny hummingbird nest. C.B. was fascinated with nature and all of God’s creation.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Julia Conwill Bickerstaff; daughters, Chrissie Mills Garner (Terry), Amory, Sherry Guin (Mike), Nettleton and Susan Presley, Plantersville; son, Corby Bickerstaff (Crystal), Evergreen; grandchildren, Maggie Ward, Jesse Mills, Brian Guin, Hayden Guin, Jay Scott, Josh Scott, Colby Bickerstaff and Jason Bickerstaff; great grandchildren, Hunter, Madison and Bentley Guin, Lauren, Ainsley and Connor Ward, Jayda and Tripp Scott, Jack Rylan and Spencer Mills; sisters, Kay Whitlock (Ruble), Stone Mountain, Ga, Cheryl Umfress (Gary), Amory and Denna Thornton, Becker; brother, Joe Bickerstaff (Linda), Becker; 19 nieces and nephews and a host of cousins.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by a son, Jason Bickerstaff and sisters, Judy Boone, Elizabeth Ann Smith, Carolyn Cox, Patricia Bickerstaff and Charles Allen Bickerstaff.
Funeral Services will be held at 2 PM, Tuesday June 28, 2016 at Cleveland-Moffett Funeral Home with Bro. Danny Wilburn and Bro. Eugene Conwill officiating. Burial will follow in Wiygul Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Jesse Mills, Brian Guin, Hayden Guin, Jay Scott, Josh Scott, Colby Bickerstaff, Jason Bickerstaff and Hunter Guin. Honorary pallbearers will be Charles Davidson, Robert Gann, Billy Cox, Jimmy Conwill, Joey Ward, Thaniel Sargeant, Allen Bruton, Huey Higginbotham, Pat McCormick and Jimmy Young.
Visitation will be Monday Evening at the funeral home from 5-8 PM.
